NASCAR Betting: Breaking Down The Best Bets For The Bojangles' Southern 500

Joey Logano continued his dominance at the Bristol Motor Speedway with a win in the Irwin Tools Night Race for the second consecutive year last weekend and it’s no surprise that he is among the betting favorites again this week heading in to the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington. With only two races to go before the Chase for the Sprint Cup gets underway, the Sprint Cup will take a week off before the race at Darlington where the sense of urgency will be wrapped up for some drivers. Here is a look at the best bets on the board for the Bojangles’ Southern 500.

The Favorite
Kevin Harvick +400

Harvick held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the last Bojangles’ Southern 500 so maybe after a week off he will finally have what it takes to finally get back to victory lane at Darlington. Harvick’s 21 top-10 finishes and 17 top-5 finishes are easily more than any other driver but he hasn’t actually won a Sprint Cup race since March and over that span he has recorded a ridiculous nine runner-up finishes including in each of the last two races at Michigan and then Bristol. Harvick proved in the last race at Darlington that he can win at this track so this is probably the race where he is most likely to get back in to the win column this season.

Next In Line
Kyle Busch +450

There was no way that Busch was ever going to be able to keep up his ridiculous hot streak after registering three straight wins at Kentucky, New Hampshire and The Brickyard to make it clear he intends on racing in the Chase this season but he has just one top-five finish since his last win and that might be reason for concern. Busch placed sixth in last year’s race at Darlington and we feel like there are better options on the board for this year’s Bojangles’ Southern 500.

Joey Logano +600

Logano picked up his hot streak where Busch left off with wins at Watkins Glen and Bristol and while he didn’t run well at Darlington last season we don’t think that matters very much heading in to this race. Logano has been carrying the Penske Racing team and he should be in the mix again in the next race at Darlington.

Matt Kenseth +600

Kenseth’s three wins are tied with Logano for the second highest total in the Sprint Cup this season with Busch and Jimmie Johnson the only drivers that have more. Kenseth is coming off a rare TRD engine failure that kept him from finishing last week but he had recorded six straight top-10 finishes heading in to last week and he finished fourth in last year’s race at Darlington.

Jimmie Johnson +800

After failing to finish any higher than 10th in four of the previous five races Johnson finally broke through with a fourth-place finish at Bristol last weekend and he certainly can’t be overlooked heading in to the Bojangles’ Southern 500. Johnson finished third in last year’s race at Darlington and despite not leading a lap last week he looked good enough that some fans will take a chance on him this week at decent odds to win.

Sleeper Pick
Clint Bowyer +2000

Bowyer earned a crucial fifth-place finish in last week’s race at Bristol and he can clinch a spot in the Chase if he wins at Darlington. Bowyer currently sits just above Aric Almirola, Kasey Kahne and Greg Biffle on the right side of the Chase cutoff line and with top-10 finishes in four of the last five races he could move one step closer to guaranteeing his spot in the Chase with a win as a sleeper pick for the Bojangles’ Southern 500.

Consensus Best Bet: Kevin Harvick +400
